Woot! Woot! It’s official – Story@Home is moving their conference to join forces with Rootstech on March 21-23, 2013 at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, UT. Many of you may know that I have been on the Board of Directors from the beginning with Story@Home, so I confess up front that I am very biased, but also VERY EXCITED about this change.
A little background for those who haven’t heard of Story@Home. Conceived by the extraordinary Carol Rice, this conference merges the worlds of family history, storytelling and blogging – united by the common love of story.
Story@Home conference offers such innovative workshops and performances by award-winning storytellers that will EXPLODE your mind with storytelling possibilities of your own. Then there are fabulous bloggers and other outstanding speakers that will help you explore ways to use the power of story in your family history research and in your home. You will come away with a whole new view of family history by tapping into this synergy of ideas.
I think most family historians can learn a LOT from those outside the field of genealogy about storytelling. We want to be able to tell our family’s stories so that our families are actually interested in their ancestry. In order for that to happen, we need to learn the skills of what makes a story compelling and to retell it and present it in a way that those we care about are interested.
The storytellers make it look sooooooo easy and effortless, but that is wherein the skill lies and then the professional bloggers...well, we all know my blog could use some help. I am so excited to learn from them again this year!
I will be also be presenting at Story@Home this workshop on:
Creative and Fun Ways to Cherish Your Family History Maybe you have some family trees, some documents, photos, maybe even a few stories… now, what do you do with it all? What do you do if you don’t have any? Our children learn the value of heritage and family by what we treasure. Come learn some inspiring and fun ways to share your family’s heritage and history in an enticing and engaging way that will have your family begging to know more.
and I will be presenting 2 classes (1 repeated twice) at RootsTech:
From Paper Piles to Digital Files: Technology for the Organized Genealogist Are you tired of spinning your wheels? Do you have a system in place to do the same complex tasks in a simple, repeatable fashion? The lack of systems and processes is all too common. The secret to a smoothly running research flow is documenting key systems and procedures so they can be easily repeated. Learn how to get started and become a highly organized genealogist by using programs like Evernote, OneNote and GTD .
Interest in Pinterest for Family History Discover how to use this easy, free site to organize, plan and save your family history research, plan family reunions, create a family cookbook and gather information to write your family history. Learn how to become a Pinterest “Pinja” and avoid becoming just an electronic hoarder in this fun session.
Story@Home “helps change the way you see your stories and the world, and help you connect in new ways with those you cherish most”, while Rootstech helps us “Learn how to find, organize, preserve and share your family’s connections and history.” See? Perfect together!
